On March 4th of 2020 the luxury handbag maker Hermes, debuted its highly anticipated makeup line, which includes a permanent collection featuring lip balm, a lip brush, a lip pencil, and 24 lipstick shades in varying finishes.
At $67 each, they’re certainly a splurge, but compare that to ten thousand for an Hermès bag and it suddenly seems like a bargain. Instead of providing a detailed description of why you’ll love wearing them, let’s get to the point. Hermes has developed another category of product, which will in-turn join the second-hand luxury market as highly investable pieces.
This isn’t the first time that Hermes has sold lipstick. Rouge Hermes was a scented lipstick intended to pair with its fragrance Rouge Hermes (created in 1984). When it was discontinued in the early 2000’s there was a frenzy of women trying to buy up the last remaining pieces. Therefore it isn’t surprising that Hermes would create colors to be re-invented each season and simultaneously create the anxiety to scoop up a few extra.
Now that most of the world is under a strict quarantine, sales of skincare products and cosmetics like lipstick have been rising, called the “lipstick index”. When times are tough consumers tend to buy smaller treats rather than more expensive items. Hermes lipstick is already increasing in value. Colors that are in high demand are already scoring top prices on eBay. Like this set for $1,230. Proving this may be the next investable sector to watch.
