Kylie Jenner has a closet full of them and Drake has admitted he is stockpiling the luxury handbags for his future lady love. But the famous and famously collectable Birkin bag is just one of the iconic accessories turned out by French luxury house Hermès and now they’re revealing just exactly what goes into creating an icon at an exhibition coming to Melbourne.
And you’re invited.
Appropriately named Hermès At Work, the event brings artisans from nine Hermès métiers (that’s fields of expertise) to share the know-how behind your favourite bags, silk squares, jewellery, gloves, watches and more. Ask questions, touch, feel and just try and walk out the door to the 520m2 exhibition space with a double-wrap Cape Cod strapped to your wrist (hint: you won’t get far).
Speaking to British artist Alice Shirley, whose fantastical, nature-inspired designs grace the squares of silk you see wrapped around the necks of some of the chicest women in the world, even she is blown away by the level of detail applied to each Hermès piece.
“I went to the Hermès factory in Lyon where they print all the silk early last year and saw one of my designs being printed for the first time. I got to see the entire process from start to finish, which was amazing.
“One of the things I had to learn, working with Hermès, is there is Hermès time for everything. So, from me handing over my first design I didn’t see it in the shops for two years. It’s a seriously intricate, hand-crafted process.”
Shirley describes the Hermès icons as “pieces of art you can live in”, which seems apt given the painstaking hours and skill required to turn out just one must-have.
Hermès At Work runs until March 17, 2018. Visit hermesatworkau.hermes.com to book your free ticket.
